Jorge Santos, artist in residence at the Fringe Festival at São Jorge

In the month of June local artist Jorge Santos will work on a statue for the Art Garden of Grand Café Manezinho. Jorge is one of those special talents that island communities seem to grow by nature. Without any formal training but with a deep urge to create, he has enriched the island with several iconic works. He is also a gifted painter and illustrator, but his heart lies in works in three-dimensions. Jorge’s art reflects the person he is: a man of action and a man of nature. Trained in the army, currently working as a fireman, he also runs Discover Experience, a company that organizes nature tours. His work ranges from impressive sculptures of birds in wood to the monument in Calheta for the fallen soldiers. In the past years he started to experiment with concrete, and he will use this material for the project in Manezinho. The whole process from the initial design to the final product will be documented and we will update you on a regular basis of the progress.
